Mark, I agree with your gripe on long message texts but recognize some
systems may not allow folks to drop stuff off in replies. I usually hit
"reply", then delete the entire contents of the message thread. This
forces me to remember names and I suppose I could selectively delete or
paste quotes, but I'm too lazy.

John, small point of clarification: My PCL was a physical stud on our
trek, superb soccer player and athlete. I should not have said or even
implied that PT studs made for bad PCLs. What I should have said, (Boy
do I wish I had a dollar for every time in my life I said that) was, "A
PT stud must learn to recognize he may have capabilities others in the
crew do not have and must compensate for that." An obvious solution on
pace along the trail is to put non-physical specimens at the point and
the #2 slot to set the pace, while the PCL rides in the # 3 spot to
encourage them to work hard and push themselves. This lets the PCL rely
on his physical attributes to better control the group. I think the
crew wants and expects their PCL to be exemplary, to set the pace and
the standard. My non-PT stud said that he specifically wanted his buddy
Eric to be PCL because of his physical prowess, that he would be strong
enough on the trail that he would be able to think about leading the
crew, not surviving the hike. Pretty insightful observation.

Also, John, we did just what you suggested. Used a version of a PT test
as a benchmark 6 months out, then worked to improve our scores. It
didn't eliminate anyone by itself but it told the person how far they
needed to go to improve. Prep hikes were much better at
self-eliminating than any PT test could have been.
