A lot of figures are being thrown around, but few are including whether
the canteens are full or not. Got to compare apples with apples, folks,
when determining relative weights. Philmont recommends 3 liters; that's
about 6.5 pounds of water.
As many of you are well aware, my Crews are pretty hardcore about weight
reduction (though not reaching fanatic/zealot status). My Crew's (dry)
weights start out at a range of about 18 pounds (willow Scouts carrying
medium sized external frame packs) to about 27.5 pounds (adults and very
large Scouts, usually carrying large internal frame packs). Actual
carry weights leaving Basecamp (includes everything) have ranged from a
low of 34 pounds average to a high of 39 pounds average, with the higher
averages having occurred in 2000 and 2002, when the amounts of food were
dramatically increased and we hadn't quite figured out yet how much to
leave at Basecamp or dump in the Swap-Boxes. The variance within the
Crew is usually about 10 pounds from the smallest trekkers to the
heaviest trekkers. I expect to be back down in the 36 - 37 pound
average range this upcoming year.
Note that we use all our own equipment on our Philtreks, which is in
most cases significantly lighter than Phil-gear.

I have slightly modified my current lists from these, but my webmaster
hasn't gotten to the changes yet (he has an 8 month old son, so he's
been way busy changing other things....)
