Although Philmont would be easier with no pack at all, a lighter pack is
preferable. I weighed in at 63#s in '03. 3 qts of water and full food
compliments. Was it harder? Naturally. Was it a problem? No. Held my own. A Scout
came in at 61#s. Was it harder? Naturally. Was it a problem? No. Held
his own. I need a lighter sleeping bag. Lighter tent. Nope, not worth the $$$.
Philmont is about choices. Had a crew leader one year who took almost
nothing. Didn't need it THAT YEAR. Other years would have been it trouble, and we
all would have suffered. Am I over preparing? Maybe. First trek ('93)
rained every day. Ran out of dry clothes. Wet and cold. Never again.
You listen. You learn (hopefully). Do what YOU think is right. Weight,
within reason, is relative. I am looking at this thread to see what I might
eliminate. I would like my pack to be lighter.
I believe someone said once, "Be prepared." Make sure you are. This list is
a great asset.
