Our unit has a Philmont 2005 wait list status number in the 1200s.
Received today a nice letter from Keith Gallaway, BSA National High
Adventure Director. The letter starts by noting, our "position on the
Philmont waiting list for 2005 will not realistically allow for an
opportunity at Philmont." The letter continues by invited our unit to
attend another high adventure base.
The letter also added an "incentive to try our oldest adventure at the
Northern Tier" by "offering a guaranteed spot for 2007 of your
choice at Philmont, Florida Sea Base, or the Double H to the
first 100 crews who sign up for a Northern Tier adventure with an
arrival date prior to July 5, 2005. To be eligible, you must sign up by
December 31, 2004."

Our Venturing Crew is #1140 on the 2005 waiting list so they received that
letter too.
This indicates to me that Northern Tier is having trouble, especially
during the first month of their season. Probably due to competition from
the commercial outfitters which operate in Ely and provide an excellent
alternative to Northern Tier. Hopefully, the situation will improve as
"competition" tends to do that over time.
In checking their web page <http://www.ntier.org/> I noticed they are
offering a 10% discount on treks arriving June 12-July 6 so that is an
additional incentive.
Yesterday, I sent an e-mail to Northern Tier asking if the "Guaranteed
Philmont 2007" program applies only to crews on the 2005 Philmont waiting
list. So far, no reply.
