Re: [Philmont]: Regarding Northern Tier dates for Philmont waiting list

Last year we had someone form the OA at the regional level come into our roundtable to do a presentation on Northern Tier. He made the pitch that if they didn't get their numbers up National was going to close it down.

Now it could have been his way of drumming up business, but what do I know.

On the topic of pack weight, I had taken the bare necessities to Philmont based on Coop's guide (great document worth the price) and the ranger was still telling us to leave stuff at base camp. The safety razor I didn't miss but the lexan bowl was sorely missed at chuck wagon. When we left base with all of the food and gear my pack weighed 46#. I weighed 175#. Part of my load was I carried the tent body and ground cloth. Three adults shared the tent, a 4 man Eureka timberline. I also carried a large pot, some tent pegs and my 4 liters of water. I can say I was not the fastest hiker in the group but I held my own going up Phillips and Trail Peak with all of the gear on the steep sides. After our night at Cyphers Mine the lead advisor took the tent and I took some of his bulky items. At the end of that day he commented on the weight of the tent, especially when it was wet.

We had 5 training hikes of 10 miles each in the six months prior to departure and on one of them we made it a two night trek with elevation changes and all the philmont protocols. And you know what it still is hard to breath when there is no air. Would I do it again? absolutely!
