Last week there was discussion of treks using equipment from
the "good old days". Here is an excerpt from a report on JLT
at Philmont in 1954:
Junior Leader Training, 1954
By Howard Cowper
Zastro is located at the southeast end of the ranch, and is
quite low, being situated at about 7,000 feet. However, this
is much higher than most of the fellows are used to, so to get them up for the rough days ahead, we give them
calisthenics every morning and take a conditioning hike every other day. The hikes are usually taken with a full pack, and believe me these desert hills and sun scorched mesas can get plenty hot walking 6 to 8 miles with a full pack in July. I might also mention that JLTs donb t carry canteens. They do so much hard hiking that there is danger of stomach cramps if they drink cold water, so no water is carried except in my canteen, and this is for medicinal purposes only.
