On day two of his second Philmont trek I noticed my son wearing tennis
shoes on the trail. I asked him where his boots were. He said he had
left them at home! What a surprise! He said he didn't realize it till we
got there and he didn't have enough money for new boots at TOT. He also
said didn't want to bother me about it (that means he didn't want the
lecture)so he didn't ask for help while we were in base camp.
Anyway, he did the whole trek in t-shoes and he never even muttered a
word of discontent about it. It was a pretty sore subject (no pun
intended) so not much was said from my end. We did keep a good eye on
him and checked with his tent mate and he never showed any signs of foot
trouble. At the end of the trek in base camp, one of our advisors asked
him about his feet and his only reply was that his feet were sore. It's
amazing what these young guys can and will do when faced with
un-escapable adversity.

Subject: [Philmont]: Forgetting boots
This summer, our entire crew of twelve took it's first trek to Philmont.
We
took the advice of several on this board by wearing our boots to the
train.
It worked. Everyone had them and no one was forced to break-in new
boots on
the trail.
Great advice, Philmonters...

One of our scouts (an Eagle scout we called "Super Scout.") forgot his
boots. He realized it at the train station just before we left.
Fortunately, he didn't live too far away and his dad was able to get
them in
time.
But we still laugh about Super Scout forgetting his boots!
