Costco has a model of a dvd/vhs player that records both
DVD's and VHS and from VHS to DVD. Price is about $150.

Actually sounds pretty easy. With the one box from Costco, you actually
eliminate boxes on top of your TV. Can't answer for picture quality though.
I suspect that may be a big ? with the cost of the gear.
It's way too hard to keep up with technology.
