So you defer to the crew advisors, rather than the contingent advisor??
What if the crew advisor is green (has never been to Philmont). We are
thinking about doing all our training as a CONTINGENT? Maybe we need to
re-think this? YIS. Mike.
ps-I use Coop's book as a bible too, for both 2002 and 2004 treks.

I've done these more in theory than execution.
I concur with the need. I tell the boys that being a member of this
contingent is your first Scouting priority, even more so than SPL. If
you can't make that commitment, don't go.
I have the desire to do other things, but I've also seen a planning
weakness from my Crew Advisors. They want to hold the boys to their
training schedule, but do not give it out with the agreement. Boys need
a chance to shape the workups based on their plans. Once they agree, or
ignore the request to consider, then it's fine to be a stickler for
commitment and participation.
As a side note, I use Cooper Wright's Advisors Guide. I insist that my
Crew Members to make 3 of 4 (200 miles away) Crew mountain weekends. I
plan for them to make 3 Crew meetings and 2 one-day Contingent Training
events. We have one or two other things like parents meetings I hope
they attend. That's all I ask. Some of my Crew Advisors have much more
robust programs, some much less. I see little difference in crew
performance based on number and difficulty of backpacking trips or in
depth education. The only thing that matters is forming them into a
Crew.
