Mike
I've not had trouble getting competent Crew Advisors. All are green.
Though I had decades of outdoor experience, and 20 years as a Marine,
being a Philmont Crew Advisor was my first real backpacking experience.
I look at the Contingent as a shell. I try to organize things that take
a load off the Crew. I try to show them orienteering. Too many Eagles
that can't orient a map. I try to show them LNT and other things that
teach well in cells. I work logistics, and share a common philosophy
with everyone.
My Crews are very independent, with their own work-up plans and budgets.
Seems to work best for us. I usually have 3 Crews in my Contingents.
