The same is true for Capital Area Council contingents. The contingent
leader does provide some good background for novice crew advisors and
crew leaders the major focus is on logistics - making sure the buses are
arranged, meals and stops enroute, and shuffling paper.
That being said I think that some degree of training/commitment
agreement is advisable. Each crew is different. The crew I went with
in 2005 was older and we concentrated on refining techniques and
conditioning since we were doing a "Super Strenuous" trek. That
included an 11-mile conditioning hike on a Saturday afternoon that was
completed in about five hours including rest stops. Another crew might
need to concentrate on basic techniques - cooking and cleaning, duty
rosters, bear bags and gear selection. A written agreement could be a
function of an advisor/leader conference or of a mutual agreement of the
crew.
