Adults need some miles though, even if they get them separately from the

Please consider, IMHO, that training hikes are for crew building, and
skill building. We do not hike a large number of miles, preferring
instead to go far enough to test the equipment, but then settle in for a
long period of training. I have read many a comment about doing 20, or
more, miles in a weekend. To each his own.
