I agree with the training schedule. It mostly is the adults that
require the most pre-trek hiking and dieting (in some cases) to
prepare.
My training regimen was fairly simple, I carried my 50 lb loaded
backpack in my truck every day and went to a hilly trail in a state
park that was 4-9 miles long (option to go longer with an extra trail
loop) almost daily until 3 months from the date that we left for
Philmont.
After that it was 5 days a week on the hilly trails and both weekend
days i did hills in another state park closer to home. I could tell the
difference by the time we were ready to go. Still was not as fast as
the majority of the boys, but no concerns with hills or distance.
I also agree that the reason that some boys and (especially one of my
adults) miss shakedown hikes is because they know they aren't really
prepared to go. That lack of preparation caused bad feelings on his
part, due to the fact that he laid the blame on anything but his lack
of preparation.
In spite of the hardships, we all had a great time and most of the boys
and advisors had a great time. As a matter of fact, half of our crew
from 2004 is going again in 2007.
