Good on you for focus and organization.
I would never expend this much energy. I've found the Backpacking MB a
very tough metric for my workups. I focus much more on building the
Crew, then getting as many (few) miles as I can fit in. I think getting
to the mountains (3 hours) is important, but not required. The time it
takes to get there and back prevents us from doing that many miles on
the trail.
I've talked to too many folks who had a good trek without ANY prep hikes
to think mileage is critical. For the youth at least:-)
Discipline, knowing the Philmont Method (see Coop's Leaders Guide), and
crew cohesion is the bottom line.
Enjoy your approach, it seems to work well for your group. That's what
makes this list great. Steal some ideas here and there, share a few of
your own.
