RE: [Philmont]: 22 year old advisors

No argument there, but the buck stops here, as the lead advisor, when it
comes to defending how I mitigate the safety of my crew to my crew's
parents. They aren't considering how old a group of people miles, and
sometimes hours, away from their son happens to be. They want to know that
I am there, looking after their sons, and making sure they come through the
program successfully and safely. Maturity is entirely variable, and
sometimes without regard to age, but try to explain that one to some folks
that may be letting their boys do something the parents have no frame of
reference for. I don't want to restart the conversation, and I'm definitely
not going to argue that there are not young guys that are even more
responsible and trustworthy than us older guys, it just all a matter of
perspective. And it's not OUR perspective, either.

A little late, but just a thought... I do understand the desire and need to
have older advisors. However, no one else mentioned this, so I thought I
would. Think about the age of most rangers, camp directors, and program
counselors at Philmont. Most of them are in the early 20s. Although there
may be plenty of immature staff members, I would be willing to bet that
everyone on a trek has met at least one staff member that they respect.
Just food for thought...
