FWIW, one area that flatlanders, even those in hilly terrain, overlook
is conditioning the feet and ankles, particularly the ankles. a smooth
trail, no matter how steep, will not strengthen you ankles. The rocky
trails at Philmont will roll your ankle at sometime during your trek.
Actually, multiple times. Good high ankle support is a must even for an
experienced flatlander. I would then look for rocky terrain, such as a
dry stream bed, to condition the feet and ankles. And remember to bring
a good ankle wrap for when a mild sprain does occur (like mine!) I
twisted my ankle on the way up to Sawmill. Vitamin I (Ibuprophen) and a
good wrap allowed my to continue the next day, which was mostly downhill
to Webster's Park (well... one nasty uphill climb!).
