RE: [Philmont]: fund raising

THANKS for putting in a PLUG for scout popcorn. I'm a district popcorn
kernel. I have been able to get more troops involved selling, because I
suggest they offer popcorn sales as an OPTIONAL individual fund raiser. The
scouts in my troop get to keep the entire commission. Most troops in the
district have a "troop" fundraiser, selling popcorn is just out there to
help scouts raise additonal funds for summer camp, Philmont, Northern Tier,
Jamboree, etc.............the really BIG, expensive stuff that makes being a
Boy Scout so much FUN.

Our council is doing something NEW this year. In the the past there were
prize incentives along with a 34% commission, which the CUBS love. The Boy
Scouts could take or leave the prizes. This year our Council is offering
38% commission IF the unit takes ONLY cash !!!! The Troops love it. The
older boys want the COLD, HARD cash!!!! They could care less about a 3 way
whistle or compass.

This past summer, A scout in MY Jamboree troop went to summer camp end of
June, Philmont in early July, and the Nat Jamboree, and he paid for all of
it himself.........mostly by selling popcorn.

Sorrry to go on so, but sometimes I think that some scouts miss out on a
great fundraising, leadership, responsiblity opportunity because they or
their leaders think that selling Popcorn is just for CUBS, or that only CUBS
are successful at selling it.

I know of quite a few $3,000 BOY scout sellers in my Coucil.
