In 1967 I went to Philmont with a council provisional crew, and went by
train from New Jersey. It was a blast. The train departed Newark in the late
afternoon and landed in Chicago at breakfast time the next morning. We spent
the day touring the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry, then boarded the
Denver Zephyr that evening. In the pre-dawn hours, the conductor allowed
some of us up into the vista-cruise dome to watch the sun rise over the
western prairie, a real memorable experience. We ate dinner on the train,
cruised the length of the train with scouts from other troops, and played
endless games of cards. What was not to like?

For us scouts, it was not too long a train ride. Two days of travel in all,
and it was over too fast. When we got off the trail, the railroads were on
strike and we had to fly home.
