RE: [Philmont]: hiking boots

I really don't know all of the features of the various brands of boots
but here is my experience.
2002 Philmont trek. Bought a new pair of Timberline boots. Not a full
leather boot but rather a soft boot and very comfortable. Wore them all
spring and they were great during the trek. Rolled my ankle a couple of
times on the trek. Rolled it real bad up on the TOT and had to have an
ace bandage to add support for the descent.
2004 Philmont trek. I found on sale a pair of full leather boots, with
goretex liner. Cabella's brand. $100.00. Very similar to some ?Marmots?
that I had seen. Not too comfortable, but not uncomfortable either. The
kind of boots that you are glad to get out of at the end of the day.
Several times I stepped on a rock/log or uneven terrain and felt the
full effect of the boot restraining my ankle from rolling over. That's
when I became convinced that absolute day long comfort is a compromise
over good foot/ankle health. I will tell any one (with adult ankles) to
go with the strongest ankle support that you can afford. You'll
sacrifice some comfort but that's what you have camp shoes for anyway.

I'm also not sure that a brand name is necessarily a qualifying feature.
The 2002 Timberlines were a middle of the road quality of boot if I
recall. In 2003 I used those same Timberline boots on a boundary waters
trek and everyone said you'll have to throw away your shoes when done
because of the mud and wet environment. Well, I kept them and I still
have them. I use them for work shoes around the house here when mowing,
painting, garage hobbies etc. They are holding up just fine for a $70.00
pair of boots.

Sorry no help on the specific brands that you asked about but I don't
think brand matters a wit.

Mike

Subject: [Philmont]: hiking boots

I am looking for a little help on which hiking boots to take a look at
for philmont next year. I see that all the vasque sundowner boots are
made in china now instead of italy. I was going to take a hard look at
these and asolo 535 tps boots. Has anyone had any experience with the
new sundowners?
