Re: [Philmont]: hiking boots

The Vasque Sundowner MX2 GTX is still made in Italy -- thus the higher
price. I wore them this summer, and they were great. I am a big guy with
narrow size 14 feet and decided to get the extra support and narrower design
of the MX2.

The experience of our crew was different, though. Our most experienced
backpacker opted for the Vasque Zephyr GTX and found it to be the lightest,
most comfortable boot he has ever worn (his previous boots were the MX2).
The NOLS list mentioned in a previous response is very limited because it
demands all leather boots for long-term durability. That is not necessarily
an issue for the typical Philmonter, and the MX2s cost over $200, while the
Zephyrs are around $160.

My son opted for the Asolo Fugitive GTX (around $150), and was very pleased.
Others in our crew had Montrails and all were happy.

Happy trails,
Doug Edmonds
