Subject: [Philmont]: Hurricane Rita
It looks like Hurricane Rita will make landfall in our area, about thirty
miles from my home. Most of us have evacuated as far away as possible. My
family drove eight hours last night to a friend's home in Big Spring Texas,
from our home in Port Neches on the coast. Our home is about thirty miles
from the coast and only 18 feet above sea level. Currently the weather
guessers predict the storm surge will go at least 40 to 50 miles inland.
The city of Port Arthur is similar to New Orleans in that it is very close
to sea level, with 20 foot tall levees around it. They have huge pump
stations just like New Orleans to get the water back over the levees.
Only a week ago I opened my home to other scouters fleeing from Southern
Louisiana. I made the same offer as other scouters had done. This week we
are affected by a second storm in our hometown. Suddenly, a nice little
hail storm on top of Mount Phillips, or getting rained on at Cito at
Philmont sounds like a nice place to be.
