Following up on Phil's comment above:

Within any given price range, the name on the boot is of very little
consequence compared to *how the boot fits*! This should be your number
one, two and three priority. How you prioritize the rest is up to you.
The Gear Guide at Backpacker.com might also help with your selection.

If do find it interesting that a very large number of Appalachian Trail
thru-hikers use trail shoes or combination (fabric/leather/synthetic)
boots rather than heavy all leather boots, and these folks are hiking
trails (especially in Pennsylvania and the White Mountains) that are
every bit as rugged as Philmont.

>From the reports of others, there are some good selections available
from sources like L L Bean, Cabela's, etc. that are a servicable product
but are available at a reasonable price. But I would do as much
research as possible. High price does not guarantee a quality boot, but
a quality boot *usually* carries a high price.
