> While you are describing camps, what do you think are the best
campfire shows at Philmont, with music or great stories.

As pointed out, quality varies by day, camp, and staff. It is also in
the "eye of the beholder". That said, the best evening program I saw was
at Cyphers in August of '04. I am certain that I was the only one in the
cabin who was moved to tears. It was a good night, and routine for the
staff, I'm sure. But the closing song that the young lady played on the
fiddle was "Ashokan Farewell" (the tune was prominent in the PBS series
on the Civil War and written by neighbors, Jay Unger & Molley Mason). I
live only several hundred yards from the "Ashokan" reservoir, and it
caught me off guard that this song was even known of out west. It WAS
home, I thought of my mountains, my woods, my wife, and I kind of lost
it (I'm glad none of the boys saw me in the back of the cabin). To add
to the emotional aspect, my daughter's boyfriend is a first class
fiddler and has played that tune with the couple who wrote it. Whenever
he plays it for us it brings tears to my eyes. I have no idea why, it is
just a beautiful and gentle melody, and he gives it such feeling. I
waited after the program until the cabin cleared and went up to thank
the young lady for the song. SHE was astounded that I even knew of the
tune, and apparently very much pleased that I was touched by her playing
of it. I think she was also interested to hear the history of the tune,
and I was pleased to be able to supply it.
After that night, whenever that tune is played, I think of two things:
Home, and that cabin at Cyphers Mine.
It's just a matter of timing, I guess.
Happy Hiking,
 Tom
