For me personally, I had to drop off about 20 pounds to get under the max
weight. Now, I'm a big guy, but that overweight was not all flab. One of
my problems with "typical" weight charts.
For at least 9 months prior to Philmont here was my conditioning schedule:
M, W, F - Swim 1 mile each morning, jog 2.5 miles each evening
T, Th, Sat. - Stationary bike (random mountain program) 30 - 45 min (8 - 12
mi.) each morning, jog 2.5 mi. each evening
Sunday - REST! (Although the last 2 months prior, I did do 3 or 4 x 4 - 9
mi. backpacking hikes on Sun.)
Of course I missed an occasional day due to conflicts with travel for
business, etc. but I was pretty religious about keeping up with this.
Even with all of this, I didn't really knock off serious pounds until I
seriously (I mean SERIOUSLY) curtailed calorie intake. I've learned the
hard way, the older you get (50) the harder the weight is to loose! So if
you're young, get rid of those pounds while you still can!!!
With all of this, I'll make two observations about my personal experience
during the trek.
(First, small point of background - Jan 05 (approx 18 mo. prior to Philmont
trek) I tore my ACL on a Scout skiing trip requiring replacement in Mar. 05.
So I also had to get beyond this and make sure I was conditioned to overcome
this.)
Observations: With all of the pre-Philmont work I was doing, my knees (both
good one and repaired one) were pretty constantly sore. When I got to
Philmont, my legs actually felt BETTER!! (Other than the day we went up
Baldy. After that, I took Advil for about 48 hrs. for my repaired knee.)
Second observation: Even with all that conditioning, I still huffed and
puffed, but so did most / all of the boys! I can state that I pretty much
kept up with any of our "horses" who led on some days.
Lastly, when I returned from Philmont and went for a 3 mi. jog, I hardly
ever got to breathing hard! Wish I could keep those "low oxygen conditioned
lungs" forever!!
John G.
612G - 06 and wishing for another trip!
