[Philmont] Conditioning

Preparation really depends upon how fit your scouts and advisors are to
begin with. We had a crew with no overweight advisors or scouts, so we
may not be very representative. Other than a few blisters, we had no
problems with the physical demands and very little problem with the
altitude.

Our training regimen:

Weekly hikes with full packs in a local park for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. We
chose trails with as much up and down as possible. Began in February.
Monthly backpacking shakedown hikes. March through June.

Dr. Bob will probably tell you that this is inadequate training and he
may be right for most crews. We just happened to have a fit group to
start with and it worked for us. Remember, training is not just about
the physical demands of Philmont.
