I would like to add one more comment regarding youth conditioning. Do
not assume that because your scouts participate in athletics that they
are prepared for Philmont. I have seen football players and
competitive swimmers who have been in great shape fall apart on high
adventure backpacking trips. Do not let any of your scouts skip the
shakedown hikes and insist that they prepare by training with full
packs and boots on. The training is about getting your body used to
the rigors of backpacking but is also about preparing for the mental
stress of carrying 50 lbs. on your back for 10 days in a strenuous
situation that few of them have experienced before.
