Remember, when comparing internal and external frame pack sizes, an
internal frame pack needs to have a larger volume since the sleeping
bag is usually carried on the inside of an internal frame pack and on
the outside of an external. Also, other items that typically must go
on the inside of an internal are often strapped to the frame,
outside, of an external. I like the comments in Cooper Wright's
Philmont Advisor's Guide where he recommends that an external frame
pack have a minimum size of 4000 cu in and an internal frame have a
minimum of 4500. I also like his comfort description of each and his
"wearing a ladder" analogy, but I'll leave it to him to quote from
his well-written guide. (Cooper Wright's & Wally Feurtado's Advisors
guide is a treasure of well researched and documented info on
preparing for a Phil Trek - highly recommended. It's available by
emailing Coop at CoopWright@aol.com. He asks only for a small
donation to his Venturing Crew as this is their primary fundraiser.)
In my most recent Phil experience (#9 this year), the Scouts in my
crew with the very popular internal frame Lowe Alpine 60+15 (aka
Contour III) at 3700+900 cu in, were borderline too small. They had
difficulty carrying certain of the more bulky items of crew gear and
had to be very clever getting things packed each morning, esp after
food pickups.
