[Philmont] scholarships

remember that Philmont has camperships for scouts that have a real need.

Let me say up front, I'm a district Popcorn "kernel". Some Boy Scouts
don't really want to sell, they think it is only for the Cubs. But I'll
tell you this............the top selling unit in my council last year was a
Boy Scout troop of 25 boys, they sold over $55,000 worth of popcorn. In my
council about 1/3 of that they keep as commission. you can do the math.

Here in my council, Units have a choice too, 34% and Prizes (which is what
the cubs/packs like) and 38% without prizes.........cold hard cash the Boy
Scouts like.

my troop offers scouts the option to sell popcorn. We let them keep the
entire 38% commission in their personal account. In 2005 one of the boys in
my Jamboree troop sold enough popcorn to go to the National Jamboree ($2K),
Philmont, AND summer camp. He did all 3 in one summer and paid for all of
it himself...............over $3K

my troop has its own troop fundraiser too.

my suggestion is to offer popcorn as an individual fundraiser in your troop
for the scout to earn money for the BIG scout trips that are life changing.

Thanks for listening. I promise I won't mention popcorn again for long
time.................

>One thing we have done that has helped scouts with the finances is created
>a personal scout account (PSA) for each scout. The PSA is funded by 50% of
>the funds raised by various fund raising activities. For example, if a boy
>sold popcorn yielding $50 to the troop we would put $25 in his PSA. My

>this year. We still give scholarships as needed but they have been more
