Philmont recommends 4000 +/- c.i. for an external and 4800 for an internal
(ref: Guidebook to Adventure). That said, you will see all sizes; like most
everything else it comes down to personal situation/preference. Some small
scouts will hit their weight limit long before a 4000 ci is full. This
summer I used a Gregory Palisade (internal, 5100 ci) and had a lot of extra
room. You can get an idea of the food volume by ordering some trail meals
from Philmont.
There is always a trade off between taking more stuff than you probably need
and being prepared for situations that might occur. When I am responsible
for a group of youths, I would rather err on having more stuff.

Subject: [Philmont] Pack Size
It’s amazing how this topic has gone off on so many tangents.
So back to my original questions below.
I’m looking for feedback from those who were at Philmont the last couple of
years.
I’ve been using larger than need be packs for 36 years and its time to
downsize.
I know Philmont (2004) over packs their food and makes you carry more stuff
than you need.
Oh, and thank you to those folks who have already answered my questions.
