[Philmont] Pack Size

I've already chimed in on this so I won't address size except to highlight
something that was written earlier. If you have an internal pack that has
more space than you need you're not stuck carrying around a bulkier pack
than you need. You simply use the compression straps to flatten the pack
smaller. It also redistributes the weight closer to your back making the
packing more comfortable. This is one advantage of internal frame packs.
Again, I own both. I'll occasionally pack with the old kelty because it
reminds me of packing years ago. It's still a good feeling on easy trails.
There are some (or there used to be at least one) external pack that had
compression straps.
 
My 14 year old son carried a 4700 CI internal pack two years ago and it was
very adequate at Philmont. Those that I know that came back from Philmont
this past summer had no different experience. As the packs downsized becuse
of the food being eaten, the scouts compressed the packs using the
compression straps.

It's amazing how this topic has gone off on so many tangents.

So back to my original questions below.

I'm looking for feedback from those who were at Philmont the last couple of
years.

I've been using larger than need be packs for 36 years and its time to
downsize.

I know Philmont (2004) over packs their food and makes you carry more stuff
than you need.

Oh, and thank you to those folks who have already answered my questions.

 What size pack volume have folks been using at Philmont recently?

Internal or External?

Did you have enough room, to much or to little?

I used a 120 liter pack in 2004 and thinking of dropping down to a 70 liter
in 2007. The 70 liter worked fine for a 7 day trip this summer with no
re-supply. But then, I don't carry as much excess stuff as at Philmont.
