I need to know what troops do for scholarships for Philmont, etc. Our
troop has not really had a policy but addressed individually as requested.
We want to create a system so to speak that will allow boys to apply for
these. Suggestions have been that boys must be active in the troop and
participate in fund raising activities of the troop. Also I believe they
should write an essay like you have to do for college scholarships using a
choice of subjects pertaining to scouting.

If anyone has any of this created and would share it, we would appreciate
it. No since in trying to create a new wheel when yours probably works!

Thanks,

As far as I know, the information is still correct, though the years
mentioned have changed.

We have two annual fundraisers (popcorn and wreaths) in which 100% of the
profits go to "Scout Accounts" based on individual sales. These two give
Scouts an opportunity to accumulate funds for their Scouting activities
and expenses, especially summer camp and high adventure.

Over the years, our troop has managed to establish a Campership/Scholarship
fund. The primary purpose is to help Scouts take part in summer camp and
high adventure trips but the fund is available for other expenses too.

To receive a Campership/Scholarship, there has to be evidence that the
Scout is attempting to help himself by participating in the two
fundraisers mentioned above. We also consider the Scout's level of
participation in our community service projects.

Several years ago, our Chartered Organization (a Baptist Church)
established a designated "Scouting Fund" to which church members may
contribute money. We've used that money for Camperships/Scholarships too.

Additionally, over the years, I've developed a short list of local
business people to whom I can go for money to help Scouts take part in
high adventure. I haven't needed to use this resource during recent years
but knowing it is there is helpful.
