I carried an REI Mars backpack (5100 ci) and really liked it. I don't
like having stuff hanging loose from my pack and everything usually
fit inside. I had a little drawstring day pay I made from some
silnylon that I used to hold stuff that wouldn't fit inside the pack
(e.g. after a food pickup). I lashed it to the daisy chain ladder
and it was all good.
We used everything our ranger suggested we take. We never bothered to
repack the food either. We had no real problems with weight even
though most of our scouts were under 120 lbs.
