Steve:
In 1998 and 2001, our Troop had crews fly into ABQ then charter bus to
Philmont. As I recall, it was close to a 4-hour bus ride, depending on
traffic and lunch stop in suburban ABQ or Taos. Consider that for timing
and expense.
In 2004, our Troop had a couple crews spend a couple days in Colorado
Springs (Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, United States Air Force Academy).
They squeeze a bunch in a couple days before traveling to Philmont.
While I have no personal experience with the train, the "buzz" is the trains
can vary greatly from close-to-on-time to many-hours-late. Some adult
advisors have commented they showed up at Philmont with high blood pressure
after an long, tiring train ride with a rowdy bunch of boys, while others
speak well of it as "it's great to be anywhere that's not at work".
Regards.
Kent McCormick

We are discussing taking the Train to Albuquerque, instead of Raton, to stay
a few days before Philmont. Hiking Sandia Peak or Bandelier, and/or
Whitewater rafting.
There will be almost 40 of us.
Did anyone do this last year?
What service did you use to get to Philmont?
Where did you stay/camp?
Thanks,
Steve Readett
