We did our own travel to Philmont this past summer. Flew into Albuquerque.
Spent 2 night there did Sandia Peak (This was good for us since we are sea
level Floridians) It confirmed for all of us that we could survive and our
lungs would not explode but yes the air is thinner an most important we were
up there in the evening and it got cool so everyone who was still waffling
on carrying cool weather gear on the trail made the correct decision. We
also did the Petroglyphs. Chartered our own Bus to Philmont (American
Tours) they were very good and showed up on time (early) and were very good
and reasonable price for group of 20.

We did look at Blue Sky but opted to do our own. In retrospect while our
trip did go off without a hitch I did show up at Philmont with High Blood
pressure. There is something to be said for letting someone else do you pre
Philmont activities us as leaders have enough to worry about.

Speaking of High Blood pressure. Don't take this to lightly they do check
at Philmont and cut you no slack. I have never had a problem with BP in the
past always had good near perfect 120/80 But I showed up to Philmont with
152/100 at medical check. Between the altitude and going around doing
checkin and being processed on day one it was unusually high. It took the
next day and 20 minutes before we left for the trail for it to come down My
advice don't take this for granted it will keep you off the trail and they
will send you home.
