[Philmont] Increased Participation was RE: Albuquerque to Philmont

Besides spending the summer at the ranch anf in the back country 75% of the time there are few perks. Pay is competitive, I have the actual 2006 figure at home .. it isn't much.

Staff was stressed in '06. Most staff camps we visitied were down from theor authorized number which impacts a number of things including attitiude and their ability to deliver program. Rangers were short which impacts the number of crews that can depart on a given day (which is fixed before the rangers are hired) and if ranger day 4 is an off day or an on day (which depends on the ttotal number of available rangers).

The ranch recruits heavily on college campus and through other means. If you went to PSR in 2006 and were 18-21 and attended as a youth it is likely you got a job offer when you camoff the trai. If you went in '06 and will be 19-21 for ther '07 season you've already gotten a recruiting letter. Its sad, but an opportunity. If you want to go to the ranch and are 18-21 its almost certain that you can work the summer in god's country.

How much were the rangers paid in 2006? Any perks?

Maybe the challenge of hiring enough staff--or at least getting enough applicants in the pool--is something we can all help with. The Scouts I've encouraged to apply for Philmont staff are usually so in awe of the ranger mystique that they don't even apply.

I'm sure the Philmont Staff Association will be encouring members to spread the word this winter, but there's no reason all Scouters can't go to http://www.scouting.org/philmont/working/index.html, download some applications, and hand them to our Scouts and former Scouts who'll be 18 next summer.

If Philmont wants to increase participation, they better figure out how to hire more rangers. This past summer, rangers worked for six straight weeks without a day off, due to a shortage or rangers.
