The Ranger staff has had temporary rangers for many years through the Air
Force Academy and Naval Academy ranger programs. I don't remember how long
they were out there but it was only for a couple of weeks.
I made a suggestion several years ago to consider expanding that program. I
am sure that there are a number of former Phil-Staffers who would give up
vacation time to go "Play Ranger" again for 2-3 weeks. (Heck, some of us would
actually pay for the privilege)
This would allow Ranger Department to give those good folks some much needed
time off and allow for the continuity of some great Philmont traditions. It
would also allow for some staff development by giving 2nd year rangers the
opportunity to lead Training Crews of these "part time rangers."
Give these part time rangers a cool patch and the opportunity to head back
to Philmont. It's a win-win for everyone. A larger ranger talent pool, less
stressed rangers, and a budget relieving line for the Philmont budget.
