Our story was similar to your except our troop was only in existence for
12 years when we finally got the opportunity to go. I would add that
the revised internet lottery is far better than the old phone in system
as most years under the phone system we never even got a circuit
connection to the ranch to even be considered. So at the end of the day
in the old system, our troop number wasn't even on the waiting list. At
least the new registration system allows all troops to have a shot at
being selected, a far better situation than before when the limits of
telephony technology excluded many.
So although a non-weighted lottery may not be ideal, it's an incredible
improvement. And perhaps your trek assignment this summer was in part
due to the improved system. Over time I think we may see that it will
provide more opportunities to troops that did not have an chance before.
BTW, I still think a weighting factor, such as Dr. Bob has promoted,
would provide a more equitable solution.

Our troop had it's first trek in over 20 years this summer. We applied
every year.
When I hear about troops that go every other year I understand why most
of the scouts in our troop NEVER got the chance to go.
If the selection process is fair I would expect troops to get treks far
less often than every other year.
I don't want to sound bitter and I know it's not the troop's fault for
getting multiple treks but the fact remains that for every troop that
got to go twice in 3 years some other troop did not get to go at all.
Please remember this as you discuss the selection process.
