[Philmont] Increased Participation was RE: Albuquerque to Philmont

Willie,

I agree that most BSA camps work their staffs hard for very little pay.
Scouts understand that and the rewards of working at a Scout camp are
certainly not financial. Nobody works at a Scout camp for the money.
However, I don't agree that the ranger situation at Philmont in '06 is
like other BSA camps.

Six weeks without a single day off! I don't think this happens at
other BSA camps. As we all understand, Philmont staff loves the place,
and rangers consider themselves to be the elite staff. However, if the
rangers never have any free time to enjoy the ranch, it will be
difficult to get them to return. Some good rangers quit last summer
and others won't be back. While the rangers were working without any
time off, the camp staff and dining staff had free time to explore the
ranch. This creates resentment toward the administration. The rangers
are very dedicated toward Philmont and have great respect for Mark
Anderson, many just felt that they were not treated well this summer.

As you may have guessed, my son was a ranger this summer. Even with
the tough working conditions, he loves Philmont and may go back. Many
of the good friends he made there will not.
