[Philmont] Increased Participation

Good evening.

We should find more ways to get troop and venturing crews to Philmont.

1/ Guys (and gals) want to go to Philmont. They don't want Plan B, regardless of whether Plan B is Northern Tier, Florida Sea Base, National or World Jamboree, the Sierras, or the Rockies. There is nothing wrong with Plan B (I have been to Northern Tier as many times as I have been to Philmont). But when you want chocolate cake, apple pie won't do, even really good apple pie with ice cream.

2/ Young people want to go to Philmont with their friends, not strangers.

3/ Young people only have about a three year window to go as youth. For adults, we have a bigger window to go to Philmont, perhaps 10 to 15 years. With Scouts and Venturers, Philmont is easiest to do when they are starting freshman, sophomore or junior year in high school. Any older, and other activities start to interfere.
