Greetings to All. In followup to last week's comments about other High
Adventures, here is a selection form that our Scouts will be using later
this week to select our 2008 Troop-run high adventure. Others may find
a similar form to be useful for their own Units.
Note that we have a sailing trip to the Bahamas, and a SCUBA trip to the
Caribbean, also planned. This form is to select our "local" high adventure.

Troop 111 Eastern High Adventure 2008 Selection Form
Per the comments I made in last week's set of "Weekly Notes," each year
the Troop attempts to run a "local" high adventure, with a threefold
focus - A) Within a reasonable driving distance; B) With a reasonable
cost; and C) Within the physical abilities of most/all of the Scouts.
If (and only if!) you are interested in attending such an event, please
review the list below and select 2 trips. Mark them as #1 (first
choice) and #2 (second choice). We will give top choices more weight in
the final decision. MARK ONLY ONE OR TWO TRIPS, AND DO NOT MARK ANY
EVENT UNLESS YOU PERSONALLY WOULD SIGN UP FOR IT *TODAY* IF IT WAS
OFFERED. Note that we will only do ONE of these events.
Note that the backpacking options below would be good preparatory events
for Philmont 2009, if the Troop is fortunate enough to get slots that
year.
The dates of this trip would be somewhere within the range Friday,
August 1st to Sunday, August 17th, 2008, the the 3rd through the 9th
being the "favored" time frame.
Name: ________________________________
Appalachian Trail "Death March" - A long-term backpacking trek on the
Appalachian Trail within the Shenandoah National Park. The minimum
would be 6 days and 50 miles. The maximum would be 10 days and would
cover the entire Park from north to south, about 115 miles. We have not
done this type trip in about 6 years. The Troop first did this type
trip in 1951, and I believe that at that time it was the Troop's first
ever high adventure trek. This is the most strenuous of the options for
2008, and would require a minimum ability level by the Scouts.
Priority (1 or 2 or leave blank) _____ Minimum or Maximum? __________
----------
Bike Trek on Skyline Drive - A six day biking trek (5 days of biking)
that covers the entire Skyline Drive, about 120 miles. Could be done
supported (support/chase vans) or unsupported (we take everything with
us); the latter would be considerably more challenging, and would
require a minimum ability level by the Scouts. Attendees must have the
Cycling Merit Badge and a quality bike (or the ability to borrow one).
Priority (1 or 2 or leave blank) _____ Supported or Unsupported?
__________
----------
Canoe Trek on the Susquehanna River - A long (6 day/60 miles or 8
days/90 miles) float and paddle down the Susquehanna River in
Pennsylvania. This is NOT a "wilderness" type event, and the Crew would
stay at established commercial campgrounds every night or almost every
night (depends on what stretch we take, and whether the campgrounds we
previously used are still open, and also if new campgrounds have
opened). We have done two such treks in my tenure, but not in about 8
years. Attendees must have the Canoeing and Swimming Merit Badges.
Priority (1 or 2 or leave blank) _____ Minimum or Maximum? __________
----------
Lenhok'sin Trail (or equivalent) - This is a mini-Philmont type
backpacking trek, lasting one week (five days on the trail). The
Lenhok'sin Trail experience is on the mountains enclosing Goshen Scout
Camp. There are other similar programs, such as "High Knoll" south of
Roanoke, and the Paul Runion Trek near Asheville, North Carolina. Some
of these treks (including Lenhok'sin) offer extended programs each day,
such as blacksmithing, rock climbing, or FoxFire, that are considerably
longer and more in-depth than similar programs at Philmont. The Troop
last did Lenhok'sin Trail in 1986 or 87, and did the Paul Runion Trek in
1994. We have not, to my knowledge, done High Knoll.
Priority (1 or 2 or leave blank) _____
----------
Triathalon Trek - This is a combination of 50 miles of bike riding on
the Skyline Drive, 25 miles of canoeing on the Shenandoah River, and
15 miles of backpacking in the Shenandoah Mountains. We have done
similar events in Pennsylvania, too (Pennsylvania Grand Canyon area).
In all, 7 days. We last did this trek in 2006, so it would not be a
"new" event. Attendees must have the Canoeing, Cycling, and Swimming
Merit Badges.
Priority (1 or 2 or leave blank) _____
