We bring virtually all of our own Crew gear, for familiarization,
lighter weight, and to save time on Days 1 and 12. Here is our current
list, including optional stuff. You could get away with less than this
if you really wanted to go bare-bones, but this is a multi-trek tested
set that represents a good compromise between utility and weight. For a
12 man Crew, the weight savings versus Philmont provided gear is roughly
5 pounds per man.
Crew Equipment List - Carried by All Troop 111 Crews
6 Two-man Backpacking Tents (Eureka Timberlites), with Ground Cloths.
1 waterproof tarp (ca. 12' x 16'), Sil-Nyl, including 2 collapsible 6'
poles, parachute cord and 8 heavy-duty, STEEL stakes; smaller Crews can
bring smaller tarps.
1 plastic sheet crew equipment ground cloth (for under the tarp; about
6 x 8).
5 bear-bags (large nylon laundry bags).
2 heavy-duty bear-bag rope (100' x 3/8 inch braided polypropylene or
nylon, NEW!, doubled up to 50' for use).
A heavy-duty pulley and a carabiner (for the 2nd bear bag rope and the
"oops" bear-bags).
A small stuff sack for bear-bag and bear-bag rope storage; can double
as an extra "oops" bear-bag.
50 foot length of parachute cord.
2 abbreviated cook-kits (2 two-gallon and 1 one-gallon pots, plus very
lightweight lids) NOTE - Could probably do with 1 two-gallon pot with
the current "rehydrate only" food.
1 abbreviated utensil-kit (2 spoons, 1 hot-pot tongs, 2 one-cup
(mess-kit sized) measuring cups, plus about 40 "Anti-Bacterial Wet-Ones"
(for hand-cleaning by cooks), and a bottle of Purell for everyone else),
and 1 - 2 pairs of scissors, to cut open food packages (a lot safer and
a lot neater than knives).
1 cleaning kit (CampSuds (1 bottle), a colander-"frisbee," a rubber
policeman, a plastic-handled scrub-brush, 1 Scrubbie, 2 SOS pads, a
drying tarp (minimum 3 x 5) or 2 large mesh-bags, and 3-4 sash-type,
kitchen sized trash bags).
2 first-aid kits, non-duplicative (1 emphasizing bandages/foot care, 1
emphasizing medications).
1 full size and 1 set of the expansion-scale maps of Philmont (the
latter as needed for our specific trek(s), with critical information
transcribed from your Trek Planning Map).
2 "Backpacker's Offices;" each including a Bic lighter, compass, small
roll of electrical tape, small knife, tube of lip balm, nail clippers,
tweezers, whistle, and a magic marker.
A "Possibles"/repairs kit; this should include a small roll of
electrical tape, small roll of duct tape, 50 feet of waxed cord, a
variety of clevis pins, a variety of safety pins, a matched pair of
universal shoulder straps, plastic tie-straps, replacement snap buckles
(all sizes), sewing kit, replacement flashlight bulb(s) for our
Super-Peli-Lites, some wire, and one "Leatherman" tool.
$ 50. for Crew Purchases, including mostly small denomination bills
(1's and 5's), no coins!
2 Collapsible 2 1/2 gallon water jugs or bladders (that don't leak!)
2 Backpacker stoves, in carry cases (in our case, MSR Wind-Pros)
Fuel bottles, 3-4 full sized per Crew (in our case, 3 450 gram Primus
cartridges; 4 needed if you cook breakfasts too)
2 personal cleanliness kits, each including 1 small bottle of CampSuds
or an unscented equivalent, 1 travel-size tube of toothpaste, and 1
small, plastic mirror.
1 Latrine kit, including 2-3 rolls of toilet paper (to start), 1 - 2
containers of "flushable wipes" (40 count each), a bottle of Purell, a
tube of Desitin Cream, zip-lok bags for contaminated wipes, and a metal
"backpacker's" (U-Dig-It) shovel.
2 "Lotions" kits (1 held in reserve), including one squeeze bottle of
high quality sunscreen and one bottle of bug repellent, all unscented,
isolated in plastic containers and each double-bagged.
"Optional Items" also carried by Troop 111 Crews
2 loud digital alarm wrist-watches
2 high-quality digital cameras with fresh batteries, installed at
BaseCamp. Two 2GB memory cards (enough for about 1200 photos at 8
megapixel resolution). One set of additional batteries.
A digital micro-recording device to keep a verbal diary (avoid a tape
recorder; moving parts don't do well at Philmont). One additional battery.
1 one-gallon resealable drink jugs (for making drink mixes in gallon
batches; avoid drink-contaminated canteens!)
A lightweight "game"-scale (0 - 50 pounds, for weighing packs during
the trek); can include with the Backpackers' Offices.
Cell Phone and extra batteries (in our case, for emergency use only).
1 bottle of quality multi-vitamins - enough for 1 per day for all
participants.
Mandatory Crew Share Items Provided by Philmont at Basecamp (even if you
bring your own):
Food
TP, MicroPur tablets, Purell, a sump "frisbee", a rubber policeman, a
set of trash bags, a set of yum-yum bags, and a salt and pepper set. In
2007, the Purell was NOT resupplied at the trail commissaries, but could
be purchased at the Trading Posts. In our case, we leave the frisbee
and rubber policeman in our locker, because we bring better versions of
both; they are returned when we get back to Basecamp.
