Tim-I'm sure you will get several lists, but like Dr Bob, we like the group
to train with what they will use at Philmont, so we take VERY little
PhilGear. What we bring:
Our own tents, with stakes and tarps. We have began the upgrade
process from tarps to Tyvek.
Noah's Tarp Dining fly, with stakes. We use an advisor's hiking
poles to support. This is about 1/2 the weight of the Philmont dining fly.
Two MSR Whisperlight Stoves (with a lighter in each bag)
One MSR Pot Kit, including handle, although there was post-trek
discussion about leaving this the next time, we only used it once to heat
water
One heavy-duty plastic serving spoon
3 fuel bottles, one big and two little. We never needed to re-fuel
at Philmont.
Large First Aid Kit
Boiling Bags (we use the Boiling Bag Method and human sump)
Carabiner for Oops Bag
Gear Repair Kit
Two collapsible water jugs
Backpacker's Shovel
What we use from Philmont:
Bear Bags
Bear Bag Ropes
Large Cookpot and Lid
Cleaning Kit (Frisbee, Scraper, Purell, CampSuds, etc)
AP Paper
We find that our gear, by and large, is much lighter than the PhilGear. We
like free-standing tents and prefer our own to the PhilTents. We have been
using Coleman Apex, but last year we had to bring a 3-person tent for our
youth females so used an REI tent of some denomination, which they loved.
My fellow advisor got a new tent for Father's Day and we used that one (I
want to say it was a Kelty), and it has two doors and two vestibules and
was nicer than the Coleman's.
As an aside, the "backpacker's shovel" that we use is one that my fellow
advisor was given as a present by his sons many moons ago. It is a
survival shovel <g>, with a compass at the top of the handle, and a hank of
fishing line and hook inside the handle. One edge is serrated, but you
couldn't cut a hot dog with the edge, it is so dull. I'm sure he could go
lighter, but he has a personal fondness for the heavier version, so he
brings it on all backpacks. The youth know he has it and the code words
are "Mr. Barnhill, I need to make a fort", and that gets them the use of
the shovel <g>. YIS. Mike Conkey ('76, '02, '04 and '07).

Scouting allies,
In preparing for a 08 trip, I am gathering information on Crew gear. This
treks focus is once again to lighten the weight of the crew gear. So the
real question is
"What does you Crew gear list have on it" How much do you really take?

Even if you only bring pulleys and carabiners life is a lot easier at
"bear bag time". I've suggested that those two items be put on the crew
list to bring. Glad we're off the best tasting water kick
