[philmont] Tour Company

Clare,

Thanks very much for the info.? I've checked out the website and asked them for more information.

BWI is pretty inconvenient for us, particularly for an early morning flight, but we had good luck with airfares from Dulles in 2004.? We, too, flew into Denver and then rented vans for the trip to Co. Springs.? Even with a drop off fee, it turned out to be our cheapest option.? Actually, it would have been cheaper to keep the vans the whole time, but there was no way I wanted to drive 5 hrs from Philmont to Denver after being on the trail....? One of my smarter moments.

Denise

I'm interested in your recommendations on companies that might eliminate the long-distance planning factor for our next trip, either in Co. Springs or elsewhere, preferably?an all-inclusive transport-sightseeing package deal.?

Denise,

We looked into many of the tour companies listed in the Philmont guidebook.? We finally went with Leading the Way?Tours (?www.leadingthewaytours.com?).? While Blue Sky seemed to be a very good company, Leading the Way ended up being about $100 less per person.? We took their cheapest package and were very pleased with what we got.? Christine Emrick related really well to the scouts, and got them all starting to think in "Philmont mode".? She was extremely efficient but very flexible.? We were especially pleased when we found out that she would make any travel?arrangements if someone had to come off the trail and go home early.? Also, we noticed that the prices of the tour package deals went up significantly as summer neared.? Blue Sky and Leading the Way both let us lock in our rate in January after asking for a quote.? We couldn't commit to a tour until we had our plane tickets.

?

BTW? When we looked into airfare, United had fares open the earliest but charged ~$400.? We waited until Southwest opened up their schedule - usually 6 months in advance - and got round trip fare for $165 out of BWI to Denver.? We had our browsers open and bought the tickets and soon as they became available.
