[philmont] Cheep shots at the Texans (Just don't know what's good for me)

Hmmmmm,

Lemme see where to start this.

I'm glad you brought up that swearing allegiance stuff. My people, the Cajuns (coonasses to illeterate Texans like Calvin) refused to swear alligiance to anyone and paid dearly for it. I think they actually swore AT King George.

First off Texas is a confusing place. You are right about the alamo and all that. But here's the crux. My people got run out of Acadia (now Nova Scotia) for refusing to swear allegance to King George of England and set upon the seven seas. Somehow we ended up in the bayous of Louisiana. I know how, but that's a lopng story.

And speakiong of getting yoru land grants. I have my great grandfathers land grant signed by Ulysses S . Grant when he was pres of the USA after the war between the states. OK, when you read it, it's for service rendered to the USA during the "war". Them's yankees signing that thing from a yankee guvment and we's southerners through and through. don't that beat all, the USA gave my family land for fighting against them. Oh well, guvments are known to do strange things from time to time.

Back to San Antone. Didga eat at Casa Rio on the river? That place has been there since before I was born. That's old. Didga get a cowboy hat at Paris Hatters, an old hole in the wall place where John Wayn and Charleston Heston got their hats.

Well, I'll let you look at Susans Stetson at AA if you promise not to touch. It came from there and since it was born and bred in Texas, it's sorta sacred. Mine is a Stetson too, but it came from Durango so it's not sacred like hers is.

I'll tell you about LaUnica later on but lets just say that on Sunday mornings after mass the Mexican men line up in four lines about 25 men deep into the parking lot with big pots under their arms waiting for food. It's that good. Not a wrod of English is spoken there either.

And speking of San Antone, I guess you heard we (Texas) just bought a letter penned by Davy Crocket, but the money's in escrow because some yankees say it's a fraud. We'll see.

OK, now about those clubs of questionable status. I'll bet you were on Louisiana avenue in Houston. There's gobs of them there. so far as I know not my wife nor my daughters have set foot in one of them. At least I hope not because enough of my hard earned $$$$$$$$$ goes to support said wife and daughters.

You see, the Yellow Rose had a lot to do with Santa Anna having to eat a little crow (and lead) and give up what is now Texas due to how should we say it, a soft spot in his heart. Therefore what others consider soilde doves, Texans consider state heros so the beat goes on. We have a reputation to uphold, I think. Or something like that. Anyway, just not in my front yeard, OK?

Oh yeah, about all that money you make from Dell adn all the IBM clones. What do you expect us to do with it all? I mean you can't eat dollar bills can you? So we give them away to needy Californians. It's the right thing to do.

And speaking of Louisiana, you outta see their new quarter. There's a definate connection there with the namesake street in Houston.

  Lets see what else?

Oh yeah! The upside down Texas flag. That was probably a well meaning Scouter from North Carolina who put it up. There's is upside down if Texas is right side up.

And you do know you will be sleeping on Republic of Texas soil while at Philont don't you. So be careful what you say, think or dream, it may come back to haunt you.

What else. Oh yeah. The alligator sauce piquante was delicious. Wish you were her to share it with. but I promise if we find an alligator at AA, I'll cook you up a batch right fast. But I don't think the law allows alligators that far up the Rio Grande. I did know of one about 1,500 miles up river a few years ago so anything is possible.

And the 20/20 hindsight. Why do you wear your glasses on the back of your head? Wouldn't they work better in the front?

DE's to professional Scouters. That will take at least two nights around the campfire for sure to sort that all out.

OK, it's 4:14 AM and you are probably pretty bleary eyed right now and on your way to our great state, therefore enjoy yourself and I'll see you soon.

  John LeBlanc

Been to San Antonio, read the Plaque at the Alamo. (it really is a just little bitty place surrounded by
fancy hotels and expensive stores) Ya know the one I'm talkin bout, the one that said all them there original Texans agreed to swear their Allegiance to Mexico and become Catholic in order to get their land grants. If that ain't selling out I'm not sure what is. (For the record they also agreed not to hold slaves but I'm certain we all agree this is a good thing) These days I support my family largely from Texas Companies (HP and Dell) I see how well they have treated their people. So I guess that does not really make me any better. Sometimes the best decision at the time turns out not to be the one you would have made if you had that 20/20 hindsight thing (me gots a resume to prove that). Have seen good men become DE's and then go to Texas for training to become "Professional Scouters" they come back and it has yet to be a good thing. Can't say if it was the same when the "bosses were in NJ or NY. Guessing
that it probably was. I'm still wondering about that law in the Houston area that requires all women between the ages of 18-60 to work a certain number of hours in a strip club. It just has to be the case given the fact that there are about three clubs on every block (Dallas did not seem much better). And then there is that challenge about Ya'll treetin your people in Austin worse than we Californian's treat the opposite end of the state (North/South) and that takes some serious doin. But in spite of all that EVERY SINGLE Scouter I have met who has been in or from Texas has turned out to be good people. So if John wants to try to carry a pack that is older than me I will make sure there is plenty of spare room in my external pack to carry whatever I is needed to make everyone comforatble. Because at the end of the day Texas Scouters are good people. even if they do hang their state flag upside down from time to
time. I wonder if that AA crew from Alabama last year got a glimpse of it. Even if they didn't a Scout is trustworthy so Calvin makes a fine enough witness. OK. Back to work, got a long night and day tomorrow so I can make my red-eye to Dallas then drive on over to Kilgore on Monday. Mark
