No escalators at Philmont to be sure. Still, more than a few times at
Philmont I was glad to be wearing my hiking boots. I lost my footing
more than once and was lucky to have the foot and ankle protection.
The croc is an interesting shoe, a lot of folks swear by them and that's OK.
Whatever shoe you wear, watch where you step before placing all your
weight down.
I personally would have difficulty with crocs on a trail with some
slope or fissures, even as an "around camp" shoe, as my feet would be
sliding out of them.
Whatever you take, footwear and otherwise, check it out on shakedown
trips before Philmont. Philmont is not the place to discover that the
gear you should be able to depend on is not up to the task.
