An official version is here:

The way I handled the advisor job is as follows: at the very start
before leaving the Council office (our crew was a council contingent
and that's were we gathered to meet our bus) I gathered everyone
around in a circle and let them know my take on being an advisor.

I explained that being an advisor meant just that. I was there to
advise them at any time they wanted my advice.

I further explained that the crew leader that they should elect was
going to lead the crew and that they should work out among themselves
how they were going to organise themselves to have a successful trek.
I did encourage them to work together as a team and to rotate
responsibilities so everyone, for example, could get to be navigator
(naviguesser?) at least once. The length of the trek in days is well
suited to seeing that everyone gets an opportunity to do every job
that a crew needs to get done.

I finally told them that it was a great honor for me to serve as their advisor.

These guys were great. We had a great crew and a great trek.
I was particularly proud of the way they looked out for each other,
stayed together and paced themselves so as to ease into the trek
during the early days to get acclimated to the altitude.

It's a boy led program. The boys lead at Philmont. The advisor is
strictly along for the ride.
